The Arab region continues to suffer from widespread gender disparities in educational attainment, access to health services, and participation in the economy and politics. To help bridge gender gaps, the United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) issued guidelines for national institutions on implementing its action plan on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The first part of the guidelines explains how to analyse the situation of organizations in terms of gender equality, underlining the importance of conducting gender audits to uncover weaknesses in ongoing efforts to achieve gender equality in institutions and their programmes.
The second part shows how to integrate gender equality in the frameworks and outputs of institutions. It includes sections on accountability; results-based management; oversight; human and financial resources; capacity; and coherence and knowledge and information management.
