Mitiga airport was closed today for 48 hours and flights diverted to Misrata as indiscriminate and sporadic gunfire and shelling is reported across Tripoli. The militia fighting that had initially been restricted to Tripoli’s southern borders spread with numerous projectiles landing across the whole capital.
Tripoli Municipality’s Capital Contact Centre (telephone number 415) reported 16 projectiles landed in Arada, Girgarish, Ghoat Shaal, Siyahia, Wadi Rabea, Furnaj, Sug Juma and Mitiga. They landed overwhelmingly on civilian or commercial locations in built-up areas.
The Tripoli Ministry of Health reported a total of 158 casualties and deaths since the militia fighting started, with 39 deaths and 119 injuries. Worryingly, it reports that most of these are to civilians.
The continued gunfire and projectiles come on the back of a supposed ceasefire which was confirmed late tonight.
Wide power cuts continue as more civilians abandon their homes for supposedly safer areas of the capital. Unidentified reconnaissance planes continue to be reported over the capital.
