Tripoli, 3 October 2017:
Mellitah Oil and Gas, the joint venture between Italian energy giant Eni and the National Oil Corporation says that workers on its Bouri and Bahr Al-Salem offshore rigs can in future to have beards.
Beards had been seen as a potential health risk because, with the risk of toxic gases on the rigs, they prevent gas masks from fitting properly.
The company says that a number of local employees want to keep their beards while on the rigs. It has now agreed, but with some exceptions. Field section heads with an emergency management role are still banned from having one. So too are members of combat teams, recue teams, technical support teams, or any other emergency support services.
