Tunis, 19 August 2017:
The regularly-closed coastal road west of Tripoli is again shut in a protest by the Wirshefana over a female student kidnapped at Tripoli University.
Despite an appeal by Presidency Council head Faiez Serraj, Wishefana militiamen have kept the coastal road between Tripoli and Zawia closed for a second day. They are protesting over the kidnapping of a Wirshefana student seized at Tripoli university on Thursday. She was abducted by an armed group along with three other female students, all from Tripoli, and a female professor. It is claimed they were taken from the campus without anyone intervening to help them.
Yesterday, the Wirshefana Supreme Council announced they were shutting the regularly-closed coastal road in a bid to force the young woman’s freedom and that of her colleagues. It was followed by an appeal not to do so from Serraj and a pledge that he would personally follow up the situation. This, however, failed to impress the militamen and they closed the road. It is reported that even the road toGharian is now blocked.
So far, there has been no news of five kidnapped women.
