Tunis, 7 August 2017:

Presidency Council (PC) co-deputy leader Ahmed Maetig has promised Mashashia tribal leaders that he will visit the tribe’s territory around Awiniya in the Jebel Nafusa and address their various complaints.

He made the promise at a meeting in Tripoli today with tribal elders and representatives who demanded that urgent action be taken by the authorities to reduce what they claimed was deliberate marginalisation. The chairman of the Mashashia Shoura Council, Tahir Al-Rifai, explained that those who had returned recently to Awiniya were confronted by a complete lack of infrastructural services and of a willingness to install them. The Mashashia representatives also called for a road south from Awinia to Al-Shgega, one of the tribe’s centres, and a hospital there.

Today’s meeting comes just ten days after Mashashia youth publicly accused the PC of ignoring them, and threatened action if it did not start negotiating with the tribe’s shoura council of elders.
