Tripoli, 17 July 2017:

Two more ambassadors to Libya have presented their credentials to Faiez Serraj as head of the Presidency Council. Today, it was the turn of the Belgian and Swedish ambassadors, Michel Tilemans and Fredrik Florén, both of whom are based in Tunis.

According to a Presidency Council statement on the credentials presentation ceremony which took place in Tripoli castle, the Belgian ambassador said that the Belgian embassy in Tripoli would reopen and start accepting applications for visas in the near future. This has not been confirmed by the Belgian authorities.

Both Tilemans and Florén are also their countries’ ambassadors to Tunisia. Unlike countries such as France, Italy, Germany and the UK, which relocated their Libya embassies to Tunis when the Libya Dawn regime took over Tripoli three years ago, Belgium and Sweden closed their Tripoli embassies altogether, handing over responsibility for Libyan affairs to their ambassadors to Tunisia.
