Tripoli, 22 June 2017:
Flights to Tripoli’s Mitiga airport were temporarily diverted to Misrata last night after the control tower was reportedly attacked by an armed group. It has not been named, although according to one report, the problem was the result of in-fighting between two groups at the airport involved in smuggling in Bangladeshi workers into the country.
There are more than one militia operating at Mitiga and within its perimeter, they co-exist and normally do not interfere with each other.
A source at the airport, however, denied that the shut-down had anything to do with clashes. It was the result of a technical issue, he insisted although he also admitted he had not been at the airport at the time but had been told not to bother going because a technical problem had caused it to close.
Flights in and out were operating normally today.
