Tunis, 26 January 2017:
There is still no news whether Khalifa Hafter will attend a meeting in Cairo with Presidency Council head Faiez Serraj organised by the Egyptian government. A senior official close to Hafter today said that he had seen the field marshal but that nothing was said about such a meeting.
Hafter is under heavy pressure by Egypt to attend and Serraj confirmed to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera this week that the encounter would take place “within the next few days”. But a date still had to be decided, he noted.
It would be a private meeting, he added, with no one there to mediate.
However, the Libya Herald has been informed by credible sources that House of Representatives President Ageela Saleh will join the discussions.
The Egyptian authorities are investing considerable effort in making the encounter happen. It is not their first attempt. There were efforts last September but in the event Hafter rejected meeting Serraj.
The two last met almost exactly a year ago, in Marj. Since then, Hafter has regularly claimed that PC has been hijacked by the Muslim Brotherhood and Tripoli controlled by illegal militias and gangs.
