Tripoli, 8 August 2016:
An air steward working with Afriqiya Airways is said to have been shot dead this afternoon while on his way to work at Tripoli’s Mitiga airport.
It is not known if the reported killing was deliberate or the result of a random shooting.
Lawlessness in Tripoli continues, particularly kidnappings. However, some abductions reported as kidnappings, particularly of journalists, have turned out to be political arrests.
On Sunday, local journalist Abubakr Al-Bizanti was stopped while driving by a militia group in the city’s Bab Ben Ghashir district and seized. He is reported as being held in the militia’s prison in the city. No reason has been given so far for the abduction.
Just over a week ago, journalist Salim Al-Shabel was arrested by RADA (Deterrence) forces while photographing protestors in Martyrs’ Square demonstrating in support of the Benghazi Defence Brigades and against French involvement in the eastern city. It is reported that he was arrested for photographing without permission.
The man who was head of foreign media for the “government” of Khalifa Ghwell, Jamal Zubia, was also arrested at the same event. Both are still being held.
