Tripoli, 15 August 2015:
The foreign ministry in Khartoum says that militants in Benghazi’s Ganfouda district are forcibly using some 200 Sudanese workers trapped there as human shields in fighting over the past four days with the Libyan National Army (LNA). Five had been killed as a result of air raids, it said today.
According to a ministry spokesman, the Sudanese are being prevented from leaving. The ministry learned about the situation and the deaths, he added, when one of the trapped workers managed to contact the Sudanese consulate in Benghazi.
The ministry, the spokesman explained, had now been in touch with the foreign ministry in the Beida-based interim government of Abdullah Al-Thinni over the matter. It, had promised to try to ensure the immediate evacuation of the Sudanese in cooperation with the Libyan Red Crescent.
So far, though, there is no sign that the Sudanese have been freed.
