Tripoli, 4 July 2016:
Clashes broke out in central Zawia this evening after iftar (the breaking of the fast: breakfast) between the Khadrawi and Ahneish families.
The two prominent families, who control controlling adjoining areas of the town with their own militias, are long-standing, bitter foes. The last gunfight they had was in March, over the killing of a Moroccan women involved with a man from each of the two families. On that occasion, several residents were forced to leave the town.
It is not known what has caused this latest outbreak of neighbourly violence.
