Benghazi, 12 March 2016:
There has been heavy clashes today between the Libyan army and militants in the Tika area, . . .[restrict]at the southern approach to Benghazi. The fighting started early this morning, drawing in units from the 204 Tank brigade as well as brigades 302, 304 and 308. Heavy clashes continued throughout the morning which one LNA soldier killed and eight wounded. The army, however, are claiming three militants killed, one of them an Egyptian.
Tika, near Garyounis and Gwarsha, is reported this evening to be still dominated by militant forces.
Meanwhile the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for a temporary ceasefire in the city to enable local humanitarian organisations provide for desperately-needed supplies of food and medical supplies to be delivered to the few remaining residents in Ganfouda and Gwarsha, the last remaining militant strongholds. It also wants to be able to organise the exit of civilian families who it believes are still in the two areas. [/restrict]
