Libyan violent deaths totalled 1,523 in 2015: Libyan NGO

London, 1 January 2016:

Libyan NGO Libyan Body Count has reported that there were a total of 1, 523 recorded . . .[restrict]violent deaths in Libya in 2015.

This was down by 54 percent (1,302) compared to revised figures for 2014 when the same organization recorded 2,825 violent deaths.

Benghazi suffered the most deaths with nearly a third (491) of all recorded deaths in Libya in the city. It was followed by Sirte in second place with 235 deaths, Sebha in third with 172, Derna in fourth with 145 and the capital Tripoli in fifth with 113 violent deaths.

Most violent deaths in 2015 occurred in the months of July, August, September and October – with August being the months with most recorded violent deaths in the whole of Libya.

These deaths, reports the NGO, give Libya a homicide rate per 100,000 of 40.78 which compares to a rate of 2,2 for Tunisia and 3.4 for Egypt.,

The NGO also reports that there were 2,542 deaths of migrants originating in Libya recorded in 2015. This compares to 3,187 migrant deaths recorded in 2014. [/restrict]
