Tripoli, 26 November 2015:
The solution to Libya’s divisions has to come from Libyans themselves and cannot involve the . . .[restrict]international community, a meeting of mayors, municipal representatives and other political figures declared in Gharian today.
The meeting, called by Ghariyan municipal council to find a Libya solution to Libya’s problems, included representatives from municipalities in Libya, mainly from the west as well as members from the General National Congress and the Khalifa Ghwell government in Tripoli, tribal leaders and representatives of a number of civil society organisations.
Officials said that those attending included representatives from Benghazi and Tobruk municipal councils as well as from Khalifa Hafter’s Operation Dignity. However, there were no known names from any of them, nor from the House of Representative or the Beida government.
At the meeting, there was agreement that Libya had problems and that Libyans had to take part in dialogue and to reconcile with one another, but there were no concrete proposals as to how this should be done.
Some mayors and representative from the south of the country were unable to attend. They had been in Tunis for a meeting and because of the restrictions on flights out of it following Tuesday’s suicide bomb, they were unable to fly back to Libya in time. [/restrict]
