London, 9 November 2015:
The British House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee on Libya has confirmed that it will . . .[restrict]not be taking any official evidence from either the Tripoli or Tobruk-based Central Bank of Libya (CBL) or the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA).
In a reply to a written question by Libya Herald the committee’s spokeswoman confirmed that ‘’the committee is not taking oral evidence on the record from anyone associated with the LIA or the Central Bank based in Tripoli or Tobruk’’.
However, it went on to add that ‘’the committee is having a number of private meetings with interested parties’’.
To the question if the committee was taking evidence from both sides, the spokeswoman added that ‘‘you can be assured that the committee has canvassed a broad range of opinion.’’
The confirmation from the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee comes on the back of a announcement by the Tripoli-based CBL and LIA that it has been invited to give briefings to the committee.
The committee had also planned to hold a public evidence session on Libya with Abdussalam El Badri, Deputy Prime Minister in the Thinni government, and Elsalhin Saad Abdulnabi, a member of the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs committee tomorrow.
However, this session was cancelled, as opposed to being postponed. No reason was given.
The committee has been hearing evidence since October from academics and experts such as Professor George Joffe as well as former UK Ambassador to Libya Dominic Asquith. [/restrict]
