Tripoli, 17 October 2015:
The southern oasis town of Murzuk finally has a mayor, sixteen months after local residents . . .[restrict]elected their municipal council.
Ibrahim Shawish was sworn into office along with members of the municipal council at the headquarters of the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections in Tripoli on Thursday.
In August, the seven councillors were ordered by the Beida government to select one of their number as mayor within a week. There was stalemate because the three Tebu members of the council did not have enough votes to select a mayor (a minimum of four councillors have to vote in favour of mayor) while the other four members were divided as to whom they wanted. They finally opted for Shawish. The Tebu members abstained. [/restrict]
