Benghazi, 14 July 2015:
A senior Ajdabiya official has escaped an assassination attempt as he left his home in the town.
Colonel . . .[restrict]Gamal Zwai, a serving army officer, was targeted yesterday by gunmen in the Damascus district but was uninjured. The identity of the attackers, who fled in a vehicle, is unknown.
The attempt on Zwai, who is the secretary of Ajdabiya’s Civil Registry comes eleven days after the murder of Sheikh Hamad Morsi Fakheri in Jawazat Street. On that occasion, the killers escaped in a Chevrolet.
Mystery still surrounds the kidnapping on 8 July of Ali Imran, who supplied local troops with rations. He is understood to have been threatened a several occasions. He was seized near the town’s Security Directorate.
He turned up four days later in Benghazi where he had been released by his captors who had stolen his vehicle.
There is rising concern in Ajdabya at poor security since militants were driven out of the town last month. The army’s 151 Battalion, withdrew from the town on 6 June after an assault on its base and has now moved south to the Wahahat oilfield. [/restrict]
