Tripoli, 28 October 2014:
Asked by Libya Herald if the UN or the international community should set a time frame . . .[restrict]or time limit for the ongoing talks between the contending forces in Libya sponsored by the UN, the UN’s Special Representative to the Secretary General (SRSG), Bernardino Leon, said that he did not believe that it was the international community who had to set the time frame.
Leon was speaking at a press conference in Tripoli today in which he reported on his latest meetings in Libya, including yesterday’s meeting in Tobruk with HoR president Ageela Saleh.
The Libya Herald pointed out that, as SRSG had admitted earlier in his press conference, despite the numerous calls for ceasefires, both the conflicting parties had failed to halt their military operations while the reconciliation dialogue was continuing.
“My opinion is that the country is running out of time. There is dangerous escalation and it is arriving at a point of no return”, warned Leon. “Libyans must sort out their own framework”, not the international community”, he added.
“We are receiving thousands of messages from Libyans from all cities, from all sides and from all points of view telling us to continue the work. The message is very clear”, he insisted. [/restrict]
