Tripoli, 13 May 2014:
House Republicans pushed through a vote by 232-186 to open a new investigation on the deadly attack on US ambassador, Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi on 11 September 2012.
This will be the eighth investigation of the murders. To date, the US State Department has been faulted for insufficient security at the consulate. No attacker has been identified and charged.
The assault occurred just weeks before the last presidential election and Republicans insist that the Obama administration downplayed the terrorist attack and misled the American people in order save himself from a political firestorm that could have cost him the White House.
Democrats maintain that an eighth investigation is unnecessary and as Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told the Associated Press: “The questions have been asked and answered time and time and time again … Let’s end the political circus.” [/restrict]
