Tripoli, 9 January 2014:
An organisation called Women Against Corruption yesterday staged a demonstration outside the Ministry of Tourism, alleging . . .[restrict]financial and administrative corruption.
The group demanded the resignation of the Minister of Tourism, Ikram Abdulsalam Imam, saying she should be held accountable for wasting public funds.
One protestor said the group had evidence that the Minister’s son had been using government cars, two of which he had written off in accidents. She added that the Undersecretary had received a Audi four wheel drive that had then been shipped to Benghazi.
Several Tourism Ministry employees reportedly supported the demonstration, and said that the Ministry wasted money by holding too many costly exhibitions which served no public benefit.
One member of the group said that yesterday’s demonstration was the first in an anti-corruption campaign that would target any ministry where there was believed to be corruption. [/restrict]
