Tripoli, 13 January 2014:
The “prime minister” of the self-styled ‘Cyrenaica government,’ Abdraba Abdulhameed Al-Barasi, survived an assassination attempt yesterday . . .[restrict]in his Beida flat.
“The incident took place after Maghreb Prayers,” spokesman for the ‘Cyrenaica government,’ Ali Al-Hassi told the Libya Herald. A gunman, believed to be Libyan, knocked at Barasi’s door, he said, but Barasi noticed that the caller was carrying a gun. “The attacker tried to shoot Barasi but he managed to defend himself,” Hassi said.
The gunman was arrested and the police are now investigating the incident, he added.
Denying comments made by the head of Beida Security Directorate suggesting the reason for the attempt was a private matter, Hassi said the crime was politically-motivated.
The ‘Cyrenaica government,’ announced in October and widely viewed as the creation of Ibrahim Jadhran, is not recognised by the Libyan government or the General National Congress. [/restrict]
