Tripoli, 12 September 2013:
A disused sand quarry in Kufra that filled with water is being used as a swimming pool by local children.
Kufra Local Council spokesman Mustafa Awjali said that the pit, in the town’s Manabe district, was the result of deep sand excavations by heavy machinery. The sand, he said, was being sold for use in construction work.
Awjali explained that underground water in Kufra was very close to surface, at a depth of just two metres in some places. It is understood that this is the source of the water.
Since the pit filled with water, Awjali said, it had been taken over by children as a swimming pool. Locals have named it ‘Kufra Pond.’ [/restrict]
