Tripoli, 11 August 2013:
Unknown gunmen this morning attacked the premises of the Jalu unit of the Petroleum Facilities Guard . . .[restrict](PFG) in the eastern oasis town of Awjila, looting and destroying camp buildings.
Some 250 kilometres south of Ajdabiya, Awjila has in recent years become a local oil services centre.
According to reports, the attackers searched the compound, which until the revolution had housed workers for a Turkish company, seizing weapons and equipment as well as vehicles belonging to PFG members. When one of the guardsmen tried to phone for help he was shot at but not injured. No one else was hurt in the incident, although a guard dog was shot dead.
The attackers set fire to the buildings before swiftly leaving.
It is thought that the attack may be linked to rivalry between the unit and another group wanting to take on oilfield protection. [/restrict]
