Benghazi, 27 December:
An unknown gunman shot and killed Lieutenant Awad Mohamed Al-Fakhri outside his house in the town of . . .[restrict]Al-Abiar, 50 kilometres to the east of Benghazi, this afternoon.
Sources told the Libya Herald that the culprit knocked on Al-Fakhri’s door, and asked to speak to the police officer when his mother answered. When Al-Fakhri came out, he was shot dead by the attacker. His mother was also injured in the attack and is currently undergoing surgery in the Al-Jala Hopsital in Benghazi.
Al-Fakhri was from the Al-Ramdani district of Al-Abiar, and was 35 years old. Local sources told the Libya Herald that he had been one of the first officers to defect from Qaddafi’s security forces to join the revolution last year.
His murder follows a string of violent attacks on security personnel in nearby Benghazi, where several officers were killed in a gun battle outside the General Security Directorate in the Al-Hawari district last week. [/restrict]
