Benghazi, 2 September:
An intelligence officer has been killed and another wounded when their car exploded in Benghazi today, Sunday, according to . . .[restrict]a spokesman from the Supreme Security Committee.
The bomb was remotely detonated when the two men got into the vehicle in Gamal Abdel-Nasser street, one of Benghazi’s busiest.
The names of either of the victims have not been revealed
According to the Reuters news agency, the SSC spokesman, Abdel Moneim Al-Hurr, had previously inferred that the victims of the blast had been carrying the device in their car, but later said the men were in fact the intended targets.
Benghazi was put on a high security alert late last month in anticipation of attacks by Qaddafi loyalists to mark the 43rd anniversary of his 1969 coup, which took place yesterday.
On Wednesday, security officers confiscated a large number of weapons and ammunition from arms dealers in one of Benghazi’s central markets. [/restrict]
