Tripoli, 1 August:

The results of the elections for Derna Local Council have been announced. The elections for the new council were . . .[restrict]held on 17 July. There were 93 candidates for 23 seats representing 13 districts.

The average turnout was low, just 38 percent.

A local political activist, Brika Abdelkader Swesi, deplored what he saw as poor levels of participation in the election, telling Al-Ahrar TV “Many were unaware of the holding of elections. They came at a time when everyone was still busy with the General National Congress Elections of July 7”.

However, in some wards the turnout was over 50 poercent and it is reported that the numbers of young people turning out to vote were encouraging.

The elections took place peacefully and the candidates, all of whom stood as independents, were elected largely on their reputations within the community, as there was little time for effective election campaigns.
