Tripoli, 11 August:
An accident at the US Embassy on Tuesday resulted in the death of a Libyan . . .[restrict]employee, a spokesman told the Libya Herald today.
There have been reports that that the member of staff in question was a guard and was killed when an entrance gate came off its hinges and crushed him. There have been suggestions that the incident was witnessed by several members of embassy staff, including the ambassador himself.
The embassy spokesman said that he could not identify the employee, nor confirm any details of the incident, without the explicit permission of the family of the deceased.
A statement from Ambassador Chris Stevens said “The employee was a valued member of the embassy who served with courage, dedication and distinction. We have conveyed our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
