Cancellation of Benghazi concert causes anger

Benghazi, March 30: The last minute cancellation of a concert scheduled for Thursday night in Benghazi by Tunisian rap artist Balti . . .[restrict]has angered fans.

Large number flocked to the city’s Uzu hotel where has been staying.

Balti, alias Dragonbalti, is one of Tunisia’s best-known rappers.  His most popular videos have had hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube.

Rap artists in Tunisia were closely involved in the revolution there, denouncing political and social injustice.  The same was the case in Egypt and to a lesser extent in Libya, and with the revolutions of the Arab Spring being very much a young people’s movement, rap has become closely associated with it.

Before Tunisia’s revolution, Ben Ali’s police viewed Balti as a thorn in their side. [/restrict]
