Benghazi, 6 October:
There is confusion as to whether eight men arrested today in Sousa are suspects in the enquiry . . .[restrict]into Thursday’s attack on a security checkpoint at the western approach to the town in which four policemen died.
A security spokesman in the town was initially reported today, Saturday, as saying that they were suspects. He also claimed they were members of the militant Islamist group Ansar Al-Sharia. However, later in the evening the same spokesman, Sami Ebreik, denied that he had said any such thing. He admitted that eight men had been arrested but said they were not involved in the case.
However, he refused to divulge what they were being charged with, saying only that it was a confidential matter. This has lead to suspicions that there is a link with the attack but that the local authorities are nervous about saying anything about it.
